Zhaga Steering Committee Approves Zhaga’s Book 18 Edition 3.0:

Zhaga is an industry-wide consortium that aims at standardizing specifications for interfaces between LED luminaires, light engines, LED connectors, LED modules. As its tag line says SMART standards, SMART lighting defining standards for the global lighting industry.

On its path towards standardizing specifications for LED and its components, Zhaga is creating a series of specifications which is known as Books. Each book defines the interface of one or more components of LED such as LED light engines, LED connectors, LED modules, LED drives, and others. So far Zhaga has released 24 Books on specifications for LED and its components and the other 2 books are in progress for release.

Zhaga’s Book 18 Edition 3.0:

Zhaga’s Book 18 is based on the specification for outdoor luminaires. Book 18 describes the smart interface between outdoor luminaires and sensing/communication modules. It specifies power and communication aspects along with electrical pins and mechanical fits. The book gives a simplified view of the addition of nodes such as sensors and communication nodes to LED luminaires.

Zhaga’s Book 18 Edi. 3.0 allows architecture to combine ANSI and Zhaga receptacle:

Book 18 Edition 3.0 that got approved in April 2021, allows hybrid luminaires support. It allows architecture for combining the ANSI receptacle and Zhaga receptacle. The 3.0 edition of book 18 allows for the architecture of combining ANSI C136.41 dimming receptacle with a Zhaga receptacle which is an addition to the features in Book 18 edition 2.0.

Along with combining the architecture, the provision of Zhaga- D4i certification for hybrid luminaires as well as control devices with an ANSI interface has become available in the new edition. Hybrid luminaires are so designed that they support applications that are based on existing lighting controllers such as ON/OFF/metering.

These hybrid luminaires not only focus to leverage the existing control features of lighting devices but also on leveraging and including new additional features such as monitoring the security of an area and sensing the surrounding environment.

Zhaga D4i Certification:

Book 18 Edition 3.0 is about the liaison between the Zhaga consortium and DALI Alliance, the owners of the DALI lighting protocol. Through this edition, the Zhaga – D4i certification for hybrid luminaires as well as control devices with an ANSI interface have become available. The Zhaga-D4i certification is accredited by Zhaga test houses that are listed on the Zhaga website. This certification can be availed only by Zhaga members under regular and associate categories. For the customers wanting the Zhaga-D4i node certification, one needs to have both Zhaga membership and the DALI Alliance membership.

This certification is made available by Zhaga and DALI to develop trust in the interoperability of nodes and luminaires from other vendors. It authorizes that luminaires are future-proof and efficient to host the latest generation of nodes that would fulfill the requirements.

The inclusion of the ANSI interface would give more flexibility to the ecosystem, increasing the horizons for designers, and creating more options for the specifiers. It would allow designers to include more options that would bring out the optimum results.
