The Light behind the hype.

The Light behind the hype.

The sustainability agenda has thrust itself to the top of the business world stage in recent years, with everyone from the local coffee shop owner to the international trading giant CEO contributing to the conversation. But behind all the ‘talk’, there are thousands of technologies, products and innovators doing the work of sustainability,  few of which contributing more than LED.

For most of my working life I’ve been on a whirlwind journey discovering the wonders that these three letters bring. Their power to transform the world around us – in real terms – is unparalleled, offering countless benefits. Here are seven to get us started:

Energy efficiency

In  many retrofit scenarios, switching to LEDs will give you an immediate 50 per cent saving –The figure can rise as high as 80 per cent when you add in smart controls.

Few other technology come close to providing such a significant saving so quickly.

Life expectancy

As well as being extremely efficient, LEDs are tough, I mean really tough! Durability is important and high quality LEDs typically last 30 to 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs and three to five times longer that compact fluorescents.

Reduce carbon footprint

Tread lightly, that’s the message everyone is chanting and no one wants to be the proverbial ‘bigfoot’ when it comes to sustainability.

Reduced maintenance

How many people does it take to change a light bulb? Manpower is a key consideration when it comes to operating services such as street or office lighting so durable fixtures are a winner. Longer life expectancies mean fewer changes.

Reduced heat

When it comes to light, heat is the enemy and LEDs emit very little heat. In comparison, compact fluorescent bulbs release about 80 per cent of their energy as heat, rising to 90 per cent for incandescent bulbs!

People friendly

LEDs are proven to enhance and improve the workplace and home. The focus recently has moved from health and safety to health, safety and wellbeing and the benefits of LED technology hit all three.

These seven benefits are only just the start of what LED technology can offer, but it’s not a bad start is it? If you want to learn the about the next phase of the LED journey then stay tuned for my next blog, which will look at how LEDs build bridges.
